Lip Service

If you’re heading to Whistler this weekend to take advantage of the snowiest month ever protect your lips to avoid chapping and sunburn.

The cell structure in your lips is different than the rest of your face. You may notice your lips are especially dry and vulnerable to cold weather at this time of the year. To help with this apply an emollient lip balm durning the day and at night before bed to help your lips stay soft.

When looking for a high quality lip balm look for products with the following ingredients:

* a minimum spf 15

* beeswax

* hemp oil, olive oil, almond oil, jojoba oil or coconut oil

* pure shea butter

* vitamin e

Avoid products with ingredients listed such as: Parabens, Phthalates, Sulfates, Propylene Glycol, Artificial Dyes, and Fragrances. Three other ingredients to avoid on the list are: Dimethicone, Petrolatum (skin irritant and clogs pores)

Protect your lips and use them wisely this winter. (wink, wink)

Enjoy a great weekend!

Amazing Oils…

Pure shea butter, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, olive oil and sesame oil all mimic the skin’s natural lipid content. At this time of the year when you’re choosing a moisturizer, pick one with a plant based oil for the best moisturizing and hydrating benefits.

Saving Face

While almost everyone loves to travel, we don’t necessarily love what greets us when we get back.

Climate and dietary changes coupled with the stress of flying, can easily result in dry, blemished and tired looking skin. I have some great news! As a traveler you can counteract these side effects by remembering to pack a few key ingredients.

According to a Ayurvedic Physician I had the pleasure of sitting next to on the plane (go figure) I was educated on how to prevent jet-legged skin with some in flight Ayurvedic beauty tips. From an ayurvedic perspective, travel causes an imbalance or increase in the vata (air) and the pitta (fire) constitution. Vata because you are increasing air and space while in flight and and pitta because you are changing time zones and diet. These imbalances can result in skin irritations, breakouts or sensitivity.

Below are some suggestions to help you maintain healthy skin when flying. healthy skin

  • Bring along with you a high quality antioxidant rich cream with Vitamin E, A, C, gingko or ginseng
  • Once the airplane door shuts, you are breathing recycled air with about 5% humidity for the duration of the flight. To compensate for this (especially, on really long flights) it is suggested to bring with you a atomizer filled with rose water (available at most health food stores) and purified water. Spritz every hour. The Rose Water is moisturizing for the skin and can also attract moisture.
  • Drink 8 ounces of water every half hour after take off and increase water intake durning the trip to flush out toxins before they can damage your skin and hair.
  • Taking some essential fatty acids (EFA’s) with you is not a bad idea. These will provide you with an extra measure of hydration from the inside out. A combination of flaxseed oil and primrose oil have an awesome outward effect of moisturizing your skin. Start taking primrose and flaxseed oil  before leaving for your trip and increase the intake while you are away. These come in pill form as well. Visit your local health food shop for the best recommendation for you.
  • Pack a high EFA snack like sunflower or pumpkin seeds or a homemade version of a flaxseed and nut bar.

Enjoy your flight :)

I hope you’ve created a awesome summer for yourself and you’re getting ready for the new season.

Often as the season changes so does your skin. With summer being almost over your skin may be showing signs of unprotected sun exposure, dehydration, poor diet and stress. So why not take a closer look at your skin and incorporate some simple changes today. I am by no means a product junkie, however when I chose products I like to use ones that are locally made and have as many natural ingredients in them as possible. I will share a few of my favorites with you in this post.
