Yoga for Healthy Skin

A regular yoga practice is excellent for more than stress release and building mental clarity. It’s proven that yoga is an excellent way to keep skin healthy, giving your skin a natural glow that radiates from miles away. I recently had a conversation with my yoga instructor and I want to share some of the useful information he shared with me. He also mentioned that a regular yoga practice is far beneficial for your skin than any jar of miracle cream…some food for thought.

Yoga purges toxins from the body: As you practice yoga your body moves through a series of postures that are held for a period of time, known as asanas. Asanas increase blood flow and circulation to the skin, helping to purge the body of toxins and impurities. Circulations is the key to a radiant complexion.  Working up a sweet is also an excellent way to drive out impurities from the skin. Sweating is a fantastic detoxifier ridding the skin of dirt, grime, oil and pollution.

After your yoga session hit the shower and clean your skin with a soap-free cleanser to wash away the odor and bacteria. The yucky grime will clog your pores causing unwanted blemishes.

Yoga delivers beneficial nutrients: Consider all the different breathing techniques you do while in your yoga practice. The breath fills the body with oxygen and blood flow. The breath of fire focuses on a sharp exhalation moving the solar plexus towards the spine. This rhythm of breathing is key; with each exhale toxins are expelled and with each inhale you flood the system with fresh oxygen.  It doesn’t get better than this:)

Yoga diminishes stress: If you enjoy yoga practice as much as I have come to, you know the feeling you have after a a great yoga practice and how it can instantly eliminate stress. It’s normal for us to experience everyday stress, however when you’re not aware of your stress levels it can have a negative effect on your skin. As your body is in a state of more stress the cortisol and androgen hormone levels are spiked. How does this relate to your skin? Well, this can lead to oily or acne in skin and it can also affect the blood flow in your skin causing skin conditions.

With asana poses and deep breathing techniques, stress is relieved and the body is silenced causing balanced hormones and improvement in your skin. By practicing yoga, your mind, body and spirit will reap a thousand plus rewards. Give your body something to thank you for, stop by a local yoga studio and take up a regular practice. Skin enlightenment is just one yoga breath away!

In addition to a regular yoga practice make sure you’re maintaining a skin care routine.

*Dirt and grime accumulate on your skin daily so use a gentle non-soap cleanser for cleansing the skin on your face and body.

*Dead skin creates a dull and lifeless look on your face. To slough off dead skin cells use a gentle exfoliator once a week, or once every couple of weeks (depending on your skin type) There is never a need to over exfoliate, our skin naturally exfoliates and sheds off the flaky dry skin ever 28-30 days.

*To hydrate and protect your skin use a daily moisturizer.

I would be more than happy to help you choose the appropriate skin care products for your skin type. email me for further education on choosing a skin care routine!
